Walking On God’s Word

For at least two months God has been telling me that I am standing at the edge of a cliff and He is still telling me to walk. Repeatedly God has been telling me to trust Him as I step out into nothing. While it is frightening stepping into the unknown, it is also exciting and liberating. I have learned that, in the eyes of God, what looks like nothing is actually something more amazing than we could ever imagine. God loves to take nothing and turn it into something. You and I as human beings are an example of that. All of creation is an example of that. When God speaks, what once was nothing becomes something glorious.

The creation story in Genesis 1 tells us, “In the beginning God created the Heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said ‘Let there be light,’ and therewas light [emphasis added].” Creating is the first thing that the Bible records God doing. How did God create? With His Word. God is the Creator. God’s Word brings life. God’s Word creates.

If you read my post last week then you will remember that Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on water all because of the words of Jesus, “I Am… Come.” It wasn’t so much that Peter was walking on the water, but rather, Peter was walking on the Word. Peter didn’t have faith in the water suddenly turning into a solid substance or His suddenly developing the ability to walk on water. Peter had faith in the Word of Christ. Christ Who is the Word made flesh. The Word brought into physical existence, dwelling on earth (John 1:14). Peter stepped out because He trusted Jesus’ Word. The fact that Jesus said it meant that it was already possible. Where it once looked like there was nothing upon which to walk, Peter walked on the Word of God.Where there was nothing, the Word of God became something.

This has been washing over me so much in learning to trust God. He keeps telling me to step out into nothing. If God is telling me to do it then, not only will He give me the ability to do it, He already has given me the ability to do it. If God says, “Step into nothing,” there is a step in nothing. As soon as God speaks, His word becomes existence.

As God continues to tell me to step out into nothing, I can choose to stay where I am, in my comfort zone, always wondering what might have happened had I trusted and obeyed. Or I can choose to be like Peter, trusting Jesus’ voice and stepping out on His Word. I can choose to stay at the edge of the cliff, staring out into the beautiful unknown, always wondering, or I can choose to take God at His Word and step out when He tells me to. I can trust that if He said it aloud, then it already exists.

When God speaks, He simultaneously creates.
