But the truth is that they were yearning for and aspiring to a better and more desirable country, that is, a heavenly [one]. For that reason God is not ashamed to be called their God [even to be surnamed their God—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob], for He has prepared a city for them. Heb. 11:16
When I read this verse it posed two very thought provoking questions:
1.) Would God be ashamed to be surnamed after me?
2.) If He were surnamed after me, what would that mean? When we say the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob it means the God of Promise, the God of the covenant, the God Who is faithful, etc. So if He were the God of Bethany, what would it mean?
God is and has been so many things in my life. He is my Everything, so there is a long list of all that He means to me. But, after a lot of thought, to say the God of Bethany would be to say “He is the God Who Rescues me.” There have been so many times in my life when I felt like I was drowning, about to take my last breath, and God has stepped in and saved me every time.
What is God to you? If God were surnamed after you, what would that mean?
