Blinded by God’s Word

111426e35a244c302cd35da9b23de562            Looking around at the state of the world, the corruption of our nation, the downfall of humanity it can be easy to become overwhelmed with fear and discouragement. What will happen next? When will Christian oppression arise in America like it has in other countries? Shootings are taking place in churches, Christians are being called judgmental and hateful, speculations of Isis threats on America have circulated which, whether true or untrue, can be frightening. I don’t say all of this to make you worried or afraid, I say it because it is the truth. These are not hidden speculations, these are the news headlines.
As Christians, how do we stand firm in our faith in the face of threats and hate crimes? Scripture. Scripture. Scripture. And more Scripture.
The only way that we can continue to rest in the peace and truth of God is through prayer, continually forming a deeper relationship with Him, and the study of His word. In the face of the facts found in the news we can rest in the truth of God.
Have you ever watched a horse race and seen the blinders that they wear? Do you know what those blinders are for? Focus. According to “Horses sometimes need to be made to focus and blinders keep the horse’s eye focused on what is ahead, rather than what is at the side or behind. That is why race horses are often given blinders – for the purpose of keeping them focused…”
Focus. That is the key. Focusing more on Christ and our purpose as a Christian more than focus on all of the chaos happening around us. How do we keep that focus? We surround ourselves with Scripture. We use Scripture as our Spiritual blinders.
When out of the corner of our eyes we see the corruption of the world and fear overtakes us, we put on our blinders that say, Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand (Is. 41:10),” and “I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world (John 16:33).” When we feel alone in our Christianity we put the blinders of Jesus’ Word in place, “…Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age (Matt. 28:20).” And when it looks like our freedom to openly love and worship Christ is slowly being suffocated, when we feel that we are outcasts in our world and nation, we remember, “For here we have no permanent city, but we are looking for the one which is to come (Heb. 13:14).”
As you read the headlines, look around at the disintegration of Christian freedom, and fear oppression, remember the Word of God. Surround yourself with His truth, allow yourself to be consumed by His Word. Put on the blinders today and focus on the initial goal.
I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Phil. 3:14).”
