What Kind of Treasure do you Have?

“…Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matt. 6:20-21).”

I’ve read and heard this Scripture my entire life and it’s meaning has always impacted me. As I was reading it this week, I decided to look up the Greek meaning of a couple of words. For those of you who are complete nerds about the original Greek and Hebrew writing of the Bible like I am, enjoy.
The word treasure in the Greek is the word “Thesauros (Strong’s G2344)” (sound familiar?). It means, “The place in which good and precious things are collected and laid up.” The word heart in the original Greek is the word “Kardia (Strong’s G2588),” which means, “The center of all physical and Spiritual life ➝ The foundation seat of thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, and endeavors.”
Kind of puts the meaning into a new perspective, doesn’t it?
I love the depth that the original writing gives. Your treasure is where you keep your most good and precious possessions. If that is also where you heart is, which is the fountain of your deepest thoughts, desires, dreams, passions, etc., then where is your treasure room and what does it hold?
If you decided to give me a tour of your treasure room, what would I see? Would there be money? Success? Selfish gain and desires? Would there be broken boxes that once held dreams that you have now given up? Would there be hopes of what you will one day become?
Would there be sacred, locked boxes full of your hopes of what you will do for God? Visions, dreams, and ideas that you have never dared breathe to anyone but God. You know, those crazy, God-sized dreams that say “One day, I want to be a missionary. I want to be a Pastor. I want to be a Youth Leader. One day, I want to change the world.”
Most importantly, in your treasure room, would there be Christ? As we looked around, would we bump into Him in a back corner somewhere, would we find an old photo of Him in a memory box from days gone by, or would He be everywhere, keeping things clean and ready for any time you need them? Would He have access to every nook and cranny, would He have the key to every locked box, would He have the authority to organize and change anything the way that He wants? Would Christ Himself be your treasure room? Would He be the very place where your deepest passions, desires, and affections are kept? Within His heart, within His plan, within His will.
For myself, I think my treasure room has a little bit of all of the above. I’m not perfect, I know there are still plenty of selfish desires in there. I know that there are a lot of broken hopes and dreams, and I know that there are a ton of hopes and visions that I have never dared speak aloud.
Most importantly, I know that there is Christ. Like I said, I’m not perfect, there are still plenty of areas that I need to surrender to Him more and allow Him to organize. But I believe I can honestly say, only because of Christ and the many miracles that He has performed in my life, that He is my treasure.
Of all of the things that I possess, physically, emotionally, and Spiritually, Christ stands above them all. He is the most good and precious thing that I could ever dream of, desire, and hope for. My heart is in Him, His heart is my heart’s greatest desire. He is of the highest value in my life. His love, His friendship, His counsel, His sacrifice, are priceless jewels.
My heart is in my Treasure, and my treasure is in my Heart.
What is your treasure, and where does it lie?

Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow, Forever; I choose Jesus.
