#LampAndLight photo challenge day 10: On Your Heart.
“Why are you downcast, oh my soul?” This question from Psalm 42 is the first thing that came to my mind when I woke up this morning.
It can be so easy to get caught up in a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions, fear and regret. If we focus on the negative and the unknown we can become depressed and frustrated.
In Psalm 42 David is crying out to and desperately longing for God. As David speaks of feeling like God has forgotten and forsaken him, he begins to remember times past – Times of rejoicing, times when God proved faithful.
I think David started out remembering the past with longing and frustration, wishing that he could go back and wondering where God is now. But as he remembers all that God has done, All that God Is, He suddenly says, “Why are you downcast, oh my soul? Hope in God!” As always, David encouraged himself in the Lord.
As he remembered the past with longing, David couldn’t help being consumed with awe and thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness in the past that carries into the present and will continue in the future.
When we become discouraged and depressed we can choose to long for days past or we can realize that just as God was faithful then, He remains faithful today and forever. His mercies are NEW Every Morning (Lam. 3:23). His mercy is always fresh, always changing, always growing. As we face new struggles, He provides new mercy.
When it seems that God’s provision has passed with time, we remember His faithfulness. We remember that we felt hopeless before and God proved faithful as always. We remember that God provided in a new, unexpected way the last time and He will do so again now.
When we are frustrated and crying, “Why aren’t You moving now like You moved then?!,” we remember that He did move then, we remember that He is always faithful and our accusations turn to praise.
This is what it is to encourage ourselves in the Lord. To remember, not what He has done, but Who He Is. God is Love. God is Faithful. He will prove His character every. single. time.
“These things I remember… (Ps. 42).” ♡
